Leadership is one of the most desirable positions in every person’s career life. Over time, every professional that talks about career advance acknowledge that it depends on different variables that influence the decisions they make from time to time. For example, it is easier for a leader to decide during their work based on what they have previously experienced, or at least, on their instincts. Therefore, as per the findings of many researchers in management and leadership, previous experience is essential, just to the same extent that intuition and 'gut calls' are critical in decision-making.
According to Hezlett (2016), experience presents challenges to people, allowing them to learn and be better placed to hold leadership positions. Indeed, leadership comes with responsibilities that people entrusted in the posts are characteristically expected to shoulder. This argument cuts across different spheres with supporting pieces of evidence from cases having all other factors remaining close to constant except previous experience. For instance, people who have formerly been in environments or positions where they managed demanding employees and assignments. People who have initially been in leadership positions in their previous employment are more preferred by prospective employees because there is a higher probability of positively impacting the new organization. The same inclination in thought leads the belief that a formerly unsatisfactory manager is unfit to hold a leadership position at present.
Northouse (2010) acknowledges previous experience as an inevitable factor behind the increasing demand for good leadership in most areas, including businesses. Most interested parties are unsure of the ideal qualities for leadership, but they are continuously pursuing it, nonetheless.
