Teaching is a unique experience that means acting with a sense of agency. As a teacher, I always think about the basis of my actions and what I want to achieve in the future. My experiences have been influential in determining my focus and aspirations as I focus on my career. Something I always wonder is, what is the characteristic of a good teacher? As Maxine Greene reveals, a teacher needs to be on the move while questioning personal development but also questioning themselves as members of the community (ColumbiaLearn, 2014). I always reflect on my practice and what I have done and the challenges I have experienced to determine any decisions I will make in the future. I consider learning and my mistakes as two significant variables that have been vital in my personal development as a teacher.
The initial days of being a teacher can be demotivating due to the vast array of challenges that can arise. Some issues include poverty and inequalities that a large number of student’s experience (ColumbiaLearn, 2014). I have had an experience where students are unable to pay their fees or have funds to purchase books and other resources that they need to learn. This is a factor that makes it harder for some students to enjoy the benefits of being in school. I think, as a teacher, I will be in a better position to handle some of the issues as I focus on contributing to the development of a better world. This can entail using new tools such as technology to improve access to resources.
It is crucial to have a new educational approach that ensures learners have unique experiences that can equip them with the skills and knowledge to handle new challenges that will arise in the future (ColumbiaLearn, 2014). This is possible via progressive education, which ensures that learners have a quality experience. This is where students engage with the course material, which results in benefits in the long run. The past experiences and theoretical knowledge ensure the person is ready to implement what they have learned in a real-life scenario.
