Insects depict polyphenism, where the ants adapt during development to either be winged or wingless or have different characteristics. Polyphenism is important in the lifecycle of insects since there is portioning of the life stages to suit the environment. The effect of this is that the ants are adapted to different seasons depending on environment and limitations (Nijhout, 1999).
