Patients’ Electronic Health Records System
Technology has been integrated into almost all the sectors including the healthcare sector. The distance between patients and doctors has been bridged and nowadays the former can seek for health related advice from the latter without the inconvenience of meeting physically. Research has also been made easier and more and more governments, as well as private healthcare agencies, are spending billions of dollars in R&D. Patients’ records are of great importance to doctors. However, over the years, doctors and nurses have had to record their patients’ data in books and papers that at times get lost or are destroyed by either fire or even floods. When retrieving such documents, nurses and doctors had to manually look for the patient’s record page or book, and if a patient’s data is missing, the doctor or nurse on call had to take the patient’s health data again. Today, it is possible for doctors and nurses to record patients’ data once and by pressing a few buttons, be able to retrieve it with the help of an EHR system.
Hospitals adopt EHR programs with the sole purpose of managing their patients’ records. One of the major advantages of using an EHR program is the simple fact that the number of patients whose data is recorded can be easily increased by manipulating the database size. The target population for this project can hence be increased even after specifying it at this point. However, currently, the hospital only caters for 200 patients and hence this project will target this number but the option of increasing the number of patients will still be there.
This system is indeed revolutionary and its benefits are indeed many. First of all, the adoption of an EHR program will help improve the quality of health care that is provided to patients. Doctors and nurses will have quick access to patients’ records and this will help them to provide care more efficiently than before.
Patients will also have the opportunity to be involved in their health more. This is important because they can take part in making informed decisions with regards to their health. Patients with chronic disease, for example, diabetes, cancer etc. will find this helpful because they will always know what to expect as well as which treatment programs are effective and which ones are not.
