My earliest memories are permeated with instability and adversity that most children fortunately avoid. We bounced between temporary dwellings as my father drifted from odd job to odd job before leaving altogether. My mother fell into the depths of addiction – spending cash on substances rather than providing basic needs. Lost in abusive relationships, she disappeared for days, leaving my sister and me alone to scavenge food and clothing. While most kids enjoyed playdates and family game nights, I was safeguarding my sister and ensuring we were fed.
