PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

Essay Instructions:
Specifications for Unit One Essay To get our semester started, you'll begin by writing about yourself, like you probably have before in English classes. But rather than the typical narrative or expository essay, you're going to write something a little different: a personal mission statement, that addresses your goals for your college career. If you've worked in the business world, you know that many companies have a mission statement: a paragraph or article summarizing the company's goals, values, and mission. You may have even collaborated on the creation of such a mission statement. Read GPC's Mission Statement and Goals here: http://www(dot)gpc(dot)edu/News_and_Information/mission.php3. You will model your own Mission Statement and Goals in a similar fashion: by first creating a simple, one or two sentence mission statement, and then following it with more detailed, specific goals. By the final draft, your Mission Statement and Goals will look much like an essay. Stephen Covey, author of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, advocates creating a personal mission statement to set goals and begin "with the end in mind." In fact, he states, Creating a Personal Mission Statement will be, without question, one of the most powerful and significant things you will ever do to take leadership of you life. In it you will identify the most important roles, relationships, and things in your life – who you want to be, what you want to do, to whom and what you want of give your life, the principles you want to anchor your life to, the legacy you want to leave. All the goals and decisions you will make in the future will be based upon it. It's like deciding first which wall you want to lean your ladder of life against, and then beginning to climb. It will be a compass – a strong source of guidance amid the stormy seas and pressing, pulling currents of your life. Consider Covey's advice for your own essay. For this assignment, you have numerous options. This mission statement can be as detailed and as personal as you like, encompassing all the facets of your life. Or, perhaps you don't want to share such intimate details. In that case, focus strictly on a mission statement and goals about college. The more concise and succinct a mission statement is, the better. But each word must count. Your final draft may only be a single page, but the thought and effort put into that page should be obvious. This assignment should not exceed two complete pages. Your grading criteria will be the Five Criteria of Effective Writing. Check the Essay Grading Rubric in the Student Guide for specifics. -------------------- Alittle about me...My mission is to become a registered nurse. I plan on taking my basic courses at GPC then transferring to North Georgia College to fulfill my dreams of becoming a nurse. A college education is really the only options for becoming a registered nurse. I know threw college there are going to be some struggles, but I plan to see this threw. Being a registered nurse will allow me the opportunity to help people on a regular basic. It will also allow me to be on my feet most of the day, instead of in an office. I know it will require some long hours of work and often times away from my family and friends but it will be well worth the sacrifices. Having the opportunity to help and take care of people in need will be a very rewarding career. Seeing life's change for the better is something I would love to go home and know that I was apart of.
