Language and Identity: What role do language and/ or race have in your life? How have language and/ or race shaped who you are?
Language refers to the communication system where a community passes messages in a structured way using oral and written words. Culture represents the altitudes, beliefs, behavior and customs of a group or community, while a race refers to a community or group of people with shared ancestry like the Chinese people. You can choose friends, and those you chose to associate with, but cannot erase your identity. My desire to learn and improve English is practical, as I sometimes use mandarin with my close friends and family members. Chinese culture has influenced how I interact with people as one who is respectful and co-operative, and these values are important to me regardless of where I am.
We are the product of our experiences that we tend to identify with what we have been exposed to. I am of Chinese descent and this has influenced how I perceive things and act around other people. While I understand Mandarin, I do not use the language often since English is the main language of communication. To get ahead in life and communicate with different people, I have had to improve my English language skills. Prevously, I saw no value of using Mandarin, when only a small section of Americans use the language, But I have come to appreciate my identity now that I know that my identity does not hold me back. My identity as a Chinese- American has resulted in me experiencing both Chinese and American culture, that I take strength and pride in my identity Assimilation is necessary, but I have been concerned that I may lose aspects of my Chinese heritage since assimilation may result in one losing their uniqueness. I am more open minded because I acknowledge and socialize people different that me yet co-operative as is common in Chinese culture.
I have had to be bilingual to communicate with my older relatives and non-family members and this has made me more accepting of different people as I acknowledge my identity, but I do not seek to impose my views on others. Even while I needed to determine when using English was most appropriate, and while I wanted to maintain my identity I did not want to exclude those who were different than me.
