Computer Hardware: Cheap and Faster Computers (ITM)

Essay Instructions:

Today’s computers are built in a variety of shapes, sizes, and computer capabilities. The continuous push for hardware and software inventions are changing the user preferences and driving the development of new computer models, hand held devices, personal assistants, etc. Laudon and Laudon’s (2012) learning tracks illustrate the evolution of computers, the inner works of a computer, and the technology drivers that are part of a lifecycle of emerging computer technologies.
Additionally, Gallaugher’s (2011) chapter 5 gives a perspective on technology advances, limitations, and the magnitude of environmental issues caused by rapidly obsolete, faster, and cheaper computing.

Case Assignment
Based on the course materials presented, write a paper answering the following questions.
What has been the impact of faster and cheaper computers for personal and company use? What technological advances and benefits are driving the expansion in the use of personal computers? What are the limitations of faster and cheaper computers?
If you cannot think of a strategy for answering this question, you may want to consider weaving all or some of the Case Learning Outcomes into your response by addressing the following:
What are the main components of personal computers used in an office environment?
How has the cost of computers used in an office changed over the past 30 – 40 years? Which main component of the computer is driving this change?
What has been the result of this cost change in the last 20 years?
What limits the price from changing drastically in the future?
What is e-waste and why is it a problem?
What new technology or change in IT concepts is evolving to reduce e-waste?
Assignment Expectations
Your paper should be short (3-4 pages, not including cover sheet and references) and to the point. It is to be structured as a point/counterpoint argument, in the following manner.
You are expected to:
Begin this paper by stating your position on these questions clearly and concisely
Cite appropriate sources and answer questions directly. Be sure to make the most effective case you can. Then present the best evidence you can, again citing three appropriate outside sources.
You will be particularly assessed on:
Your ability to see what the module is all about and to structure your paper accordingly.
Your informed commentary and analysis -- simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper.
Your ability to apply the professional language and terminology of systems design and analysis correctly and in context; you are expected to be familiar with this language and use it appropriately.

Computer Hardware: Cheap and Faster Computers
The current state of computer technology has proven Moore’s Law that for every eighteen months, there is a doubling processing power of the computer. The statement holds some truth, for instance, the modern mobile phones have advanced processing power and data storage with the provision of merged digital music players and cameras. Moore’s law implies that in approximately ten years to come, the position in which computers are holding presently will be usurped by mobile phones in achieving same speed, power, and performance. Computer technology has more to offer to the society, although with every advancement in innovation, comes associated side effects. Computer technology has pervasive impacts in the contemporary society as long as humans look for ways of bettering their lives.
Impacts of Cheap and Faster Computers
The reduced cost of computers is due to the wide adoption of silicon in the manufacturing of microprocessors which, through the application of nanotechnology, can be compressed to atomic sizes. Nanotechnology allows miniaturization of elements, thus translating to reduced costs and increased speed (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). The availability of cheap and faster computers has had a significant impact on personal and company application of computers. The effects can be categorized into social and economic impacts. The impacts of personal computer use can be explained in social perspective regarding communication, education, and entertainment. Other than promoting online tutoring, cheap and faster computer technology has enhanced dissemination of information with utilities such as search engines availing information readily and at a reduced cost. Cheap and faster technology has impacted the entertainment scene in that it is now possible to have music in an electronic format, unlike the long time where CD’s were used (Gallaugher, 2012).
Economic impacts of cheap and fast technology have been felt in organizations’ application of the computer. Contemporary technology has impacted positively on business experimentation such that it can be done faster and at an affordable cost. According to Laudon K. and Laudon J. (2012), computer technology has also boosted productivity due to the enhanced capability of replicating product and process innovation leading to greater fidelity and speed. The global society is advocating for internationalization of businesses, and the impact of computer technology has made trade and international business easier, reliable and faster. Computer use in companies has led to the introduction of the modern concept of social marketing that aid in business promotion and segmentation. The small and laggard firms are benefiting from the cheap computers as they endeavor to bridge the...
