For this particular project, I have decided to evaluate the work of Artemisia Gentileschi and determine why she is called an early feminist. This topic is of interest for me because I always wanted to know more about Italian Baroque painters, and as far as I know, Artemisia Gentileschi is one of the most accomplished and famous painters of the generation that follows Caravaggio. She emerged as a well-versed and prominent Italian Baroque painter in an era when female painters were not appreciated or accepted by the artistic community or patrons. However, their negative reactions or responses could not keep Artemisia Gentileschi from trying her luck in the field of art. She soon became one of the active members of Florence’s Accademia di Arte del Disegno and provided her services to international clients. Some of her most significant and popular themes are Judith Slaying Holofernes (the best version is 1614’s painting which is present in the Uffizi gallery) and Susanna and the Elders (the best version is 1610’s painting which can be found in Pommersfelden). In addition, Judith and Her Maidservant is her 1625’s version which can be located at the Detroit Institute of Arts).
Artemisia Gentileschi was born in July 1593, in Rome (Biography.com, 2017). She was the first child of Prudenzia di Ottaviano Montoni and Tusc...
