Introduction
The short and humorous story, “Rip Van Winkle” by WWashington Irving first appeared in the Sketch book at around 1819-20. In the short story, Rip, the main character always seems bothered by his wife. Their home appears chaotic, with almost everything never in order. Nonetheless, Rip is considered the good neighbour and liked by everyone in town. Even with an imperfect situation at home, Rip is good natured and has won the hearts of everyone in his community. One day, while on his way to the squirrel hunting, he encounters a stranger who takes him to mysterious ravine where he met unusual humans. Against his will, Rip drinks with the group and falls asleep. When he wakes up 20 years later and finds his way back to the village, Rips life changes forever. Through this tale, the author explored the history of the Catskill Mountain, while connecting it with the old European myths and traditions of the old world.
