Introduction
United Nations has been reported to be the only historical multilateral organization that has a membership approaching universality as well as having its agendas encompassing all the various areas of the human activities in the all the regions around the globe. Indeed, it is seen as the marketplace where much of the multilateral diplomacy of the world is conducted, the main mechanism where the various views within the international community are accorded expression, as well as a forum where grievances can be aired and consequently resolved incase the members are inclined. The ability of the UN to live up to the ideals of its founders as well as its potential is in most cases exclusively determined by the various 188 countries that collectively constitute the UN. Moreover, the successes of the UN are the successes of the member countries and its failures are their failures as well. However, the UN can only accomplish that which it is allowed by its members (The Canada Page, n.d).
Canada has been reported to be an active as well as a very committed participant of the United Nations since the time it was founded in the year 1945 in San Francisco, where it has been indicated that Canada was able to play a major role in the historical drafting of the UN Charter. Various individuals within Canada have been able to serve several vital roles within the UN, and it is reported that many of the great accomplishments of the UN have had a significant Canadian dimension. For instance, it is reported that John Humphrey was the main author of the historical Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Lester Pearson was also key in the invention of the peacekeeping concept where he later won a Nobel Peace Prize for his relentless efforts in resolving the Suez Crisis of the year 1956 and several others (The Canada Page, n.d). This paper will discuss the United Nations in Canada.
