Introduction: Up to date researchers have indicated that social learning theory, deterrence theory and attitude as the major theories that explain digital crime. However no report examined whether attitude theory mediated between social learning theory and deterrence theory. Furthermore no research in digital crime has involved the role of value in such examinations.
Digital crime can be defined as the illegal copying digital content, in that might be in document audio, software or even digital video for personal reason without explicit permission and compensation for the holder. Digital crime has been illegal since the enforcement of the Copyright Act 1976.This act ensured that any copying of information and distribution of digital media through the internet a felony offence. This law has produced a number of court cases from Hacking, pirating and also software distribution without the permission of the holder.
World intellectual property organization has created several laws in order to help in digital protection. WIPO has three regulations that include the unlawful taking of digital materials, the copyright treaty and finally the phonogram treaty. Therefore digital crime is a global calamity. Due to the attribute of the internet, digital crime takes place in almost deceit hence making forensic investigation and tracking close to impossible.
The purpose of this paper is to give a contribution to the research by examining digital crime theory. Denning,(1998) argued that digital crime has been rampant among the college students since they routinely used to balance computers and other highly priced software which they used in hacking and involving themselves in other kinds of cybercrimes.
Self control theory; this is one of the most popular digital crime theories. The significant component of this theory is low self control. Low self control is the affects how an individual makes decisions. Low self-control manifest in various ways; the major way is through criminal behavior. All criminal activities and involvement are usually attractive to individuals with low self-control .hence low self-control should have a direct link to digital crime. A person with low self-control will not honor the licensing or the protection treaty between the owner of the digital property and copyright holder.
