How Did George Washington Influence the History of The United States?
George Washington played a critical role in the formation of the United States. He, among others, co-authored the constitution and went ahead to become the first president. He, however, wanted to lead a private life after the war but the public demand he accepted to lead the country. His service to the American people was characterized by prudence, integrity, fairness, and justice that laid the foundation for future leaders. His visionary leadership and decisiveness directed the young country in the right direction as he steered it through many challenges that it had. He influenced the course of history in some ways that have shaped the American political landscape to to-date.
He appointed Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton to his cabinet. They both had divergent views of how the country should be run and the powers the federal government had over the states. The two leaders differed greatly on this issue, and it has since shaped the American politics and split it into Republican and federalists. Though the agendas for the two parties have changed over the years, their origin can be traced to George Washington who sat above the issue and weighed in more on Hamilton’s ideologies.
