The Development of Using Slaves for Labor
The destinies of Africans that arrived in the British new world as immigrants were determined by the colonial powers and this marked the beginning of slave labor (Baptist & ‎Camp, 2006). The first bunch of African immigrants to arrive in America was neither free nor slaves, but this changed when the demand for free and cheap labor began in 1619. The majority of immigrants in this group lived as free men, but served as indentured servants. There was a scarcity of labor in the Old South plantations in the mid-1916 and this led to the replacement of indentured servitude to slavery. Slavery was never practiced in native England, but the scarcity of labor in its colonies like America led to the adoption of the slave tradition (Baptist & ‎Camp, 2006). Slavery was established for the first time in 1961 in the Virginia colony and this was later followed by other southern colonies such as Carolina and Maryland. Georgia is the only colony in the South that resisted slave labor, but would later adopt it after massive pressure from citizens.
African slavery had initially been banned in Georgia, but the law was later repealed after 17 years as the need for slave labor increased (Civilwar.org. 2014). African immigrants would later be condemned to slavery as most of the colonies in the British New World passed new laws to support slave labor. Middle and Northern regions also adopted slave labor as time went by and the Africa immigrants in places like Quaker Pennsylvania and Puritan Massachusetts also lived in bondage (Kolchin, 2003). Although the demand for slave labor was not high in the North, because of the geography and the economics of the region, the Africans in the region did not live a free life. The laws in the Northern regions were not as systematic as the laws in the South, but slavery was recognized in the region (Civilwar.org. 2014). Some Northern colonies such as Pennsylvania granted the slaves, some freedoms and were not keen to adopt the slavery tradition. Most of the British Colonies had tens of thousands of slaves by the beginning of the eighteenth century as a result of continued importation of slaves (Civilwar.org. 2014). Colonial leaders tried to fight for liberty and the abolishment of slave labor in the eighteenth century, but their cries were in vain.
