Introduction
Standardized coding systems in nursing are standardized nursing languages (SNL) agreed upon and used by nurses from a certain geographical location, country, and hospital or of a certain care unit, to document care (Jones, Lunney, Keenan, & Moorhead, 2010). Nurses use the language to record their assessment or observation of patients. SNL gives nurses a common language for communication. SNL should be concise and should describe the outcomes of nursing. The SNLs are used to computerize records and information about a patient (Rutherford, 2008).
Nurses are required to document care using SNL because they enhance improved communication between the caregivers and nurses (Rutherford, 2008). Using SNL is useful in handing down information to another nurse about a patient, and the observations they have made. Also, documenting care using SNL helps to know the contribution of a nurse to the outcome of a patient (Rutherford, 2008). This helps to improve patient care.
