Respiratory infections are common in countries with high levels of pollution. The ailments range from mild infections such as a sore throat and allergies, to serious illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, lung cancer and asthma. Asthma is a condition that affects the lungs. Symptoms of the disease include chest tightness and coughs. The disease can be controlled by avoiding prompts that can lead to an attack and by taking the right medicine. The ways of preventing and treating the disease, will be explored in this essay to reduce cases of an asthma attack.
Air pollution contributes significantly to the rising cases of asthma attacks. Major air pollutants found in the environment are Sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides and lead. Large quantities of air must be taken in by the lungs to provide an adequate amount of oxygen to the blood system. Pollutants found in the air are also taken in by the lungs in the process. They damage the lungs unwaveringly by triggering inflammation in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Intake of ozone can additionally injure the alveoli and the air sacs found in the lungs where the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place (Sharma, W, & Atri, 2014).
Asthma can be treated by taking medicine as instructed by a doctor and by staying away from conditions that can initiate an attack. The primary factors that can elicit an attack are smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution and tobacco smoke. The factors that lead to an attack in one person may be different from those that can generate an attack on the other person (Kumar, 2015).
