The use of technology is increasing in all health care settings. Address the following:
How does technology affect patient outcomes?
Identify two (2) advantages and two (2) disadvantages of technology as they apply to the perinatal setting. Explain your answer.
Discuss strategies the Registered Nurse can employ to reverse the two identified technology disadvantages. Provide a rationale for each strategy indicating how it results in the provision of safe, quality care in the perinatal setting. Include a reference from the literature to support the information provided.
Base your initial post on your readings and research of this topic.

Technology affects patient outcomes in many ways. Through electronic access, patient records will be obtained from different hospitals eliminating the problem of delays in transfer of files in cases where a patient is referred to another hospital. With electronic records, the patient's allergies can be tracked, medications are easily cross-checked, and past reactions to drugs can be assessed(Kee, Hayes, & McCuistion, 2015). Accessing the patient records prevents possibilities of unnecessary tests and diagnosis often done to patients due to delays in records. Also, telesurgery has improved surgical outcomes on patients by allowing access to specialists that would otherwise be inaccessible creating improved understanding and knowledge for the surgeon.
Application of technology in prenatal settings has both advantages and disadvantages. It is advantageous in two ways. One is increased privacy for the clients as the information is contained in a system accessed by prenatal medical staff only. Another advantage is a reduction in language and literacy barriers while receiving care as a result of the use of standardized terminologies and language (Kee, Hayes, & McCuistion, 2015).
