Using supplemental staff in an organization comes with several benefits as well as disadvantages. One major benefit is that it can be a quick solution to an organization facing staffing shortages. The health sector faces a nursing shortage associated with increased medical errors and lower patient satisfaction; supplemental staff can help alleviate such problems (Faller, 2019). The use of supplemental staff also brings to the organization valuable attributes that can help improve performance. Faller (2019) noted that supplemental staff brings new knowledge, new cultures, innovative practices, and a complementary attitude to the organization. According to Crowell and Boynton (2020), supplemental staff “bring perspectives that are influenced by working within and across multiple systems” (p. 27). A key disadvantage of using supplemental staff is the high cost associated with it (Crowell & Boynton, 2020). Another disadvantage is that there is an existing belief that the services provided by supplemental staff are below par because of the lack of familiarity with the new environment (Crowell & Boynton, 2020). Their use is also associated with unfavorable outcomes. In a study by Dall’Ora et al. (2020), supplemental staffing was linked to increased mortality.
Floating staff can be beneficial and disadvantageous at the same time. One benefit of using floating staff is that it helps address staffing problems. Floating staff also offers organization flexibility in meeting scheduling and staffing demands while at the same time helping it decrease costs associated with overtime, incentive pay, and contract labor (Straw, 2018). Specifically, organizations that utilize floating staff save up to 5% of total labor costs (Straw, 2018). Floating staff is also beneficial because personnel gets the experience of working in different units and departments, which can help them gain valuable knowledge (Bitanga, n.d.).
