Standards of Professional Performance
The Standards of Professional Performance basically dictates a certain level of competency as well as behavioral aspects by which any professional is judged (Soskolne, 1998). Regardless of profession, people are expected to behave or conduct themselves in ways that mirror their parent organization' culture. Organizations are mindful of their reputation and hence the firm stance that most of them often have with regards to their Standards of Professional Performance. In nursing, the expectation is the same. Some the aspects of SPP include ethics, communication, resource utilization, leadership, quality of practice, collaboration, environmental health, and evidence-based practice and research. Nursing is a crucial profession without which a nation's health could be wanting. This means that is imperative to have SPPs in place. As a profession, nursing teaches or helps nurses to always hold themselves accountable to themselves first, their patients, their fellow nurses, and finally the entire society. This undoubtedly elucidates on the importance of having SPPs to help guide and dictate the behavior of registered nurses.
The Standards of Professional Performance include the following:
* Ethics – all registered nurses are expected to practice within the set ethical standards, and will be found in violation of the Standards of Professional Performance if they do not abide.
According to the National Association of School Nurses (2016), “a school nurse is an advocate for students, families, and members of the school community.â€Β This then means that school nurses must always aid or ensure that the health and safety of those within their care is guaranteed. Every person's expectation is that regardless of their race, religion, or complication, the nurse will tend to them impartially. This directly correlates to school nursing because either way, life comes first.
* Education – this standard represents the knowledge and skills of each and every nurse. People trust that the nurses who tend to them are endowed with the required skills and knowledge and that they are competent enough to deal with their problem or correctly advocate for certain treatments. In every profession, skill and knowledge are indeed of the essence and one must ensure that they are adequately endowed.
When it comes to school nursing practice, the expectation does not dwindle. The clients to the school nurses need to always be assured of the school nurses' knowledge and skills based on their judgment and diagnosis.
