The health problem that is specific to the frail elderly population is falls and injuries. Falls are events that result in an individual coming to rest unintentionally on the ground or on other lower levels, and not because of the following: abrupt onset of paralysis, loss of consciousness, an epileptic seizure, or sustaining a violent blow (Dionyssiotis, 2012). Many frail elderly persons are afraid of falling, and they actually have a good reason for having this fear. Among older persons, falls are common. Roughly â…“ of senior citizens living at home fall at least once annually, and roughly 50% of older adults living in a nursing home fall (Rubenstein, 2015). In America, falls are the top cause of accidental death and the seventh main cause of death in persons aged at least 65 years. An older adult who has had a fall has a higher chance of falling yet again. Fear of falling could bring a number of problems. Senior citizens might be worried about carrying out their everyday activities and therefore lose their self-confidence as well as their autonomy (Rubenstein, 2015).
Pneumonia, fractured hips, and considerably decreased mobility are amongst the most deadly health risks that senior citizens face. For many seniors however, these threats are not a foreseeable part of aging. They are brought about by falls, a problem that is totally preventable that results in many serious injuries as well as the start of debilitating ailments which rob senior citizens of their mobility, independence, and even their lives.
