Nursing as a profession has evolved throughout the history of humankind. There has been a great transformation in nursing as a profession throughout out the years in terms of practice, role, policy changes and types of caregivers. The philosophy of school nursing practice dates back before the establishment of nursing institutes. The earliest nurses were usually nuns and women who used to provide care for the homeless, poor and the sick. However, the way of caregiving to the sick changed with the development of new procedures by Florence Nightingale in 1854.Known commonly as the mother of modern nursing, Florence helped to revolutionize the nursing profession by coming up with the nursing professional standards used today.
With the introduction of modern nursing, various school nurses are now governed with guidelines that defines their role and way of operation much of which being the modification of the standard procedures set by Florence Nightingale. To provide guidance to the nursing operations, various roles have been put in place by the different nursing organization. One such organization is the California School Health Centers Association. The school, for instance, has stated clearly the role of school nurses which they have to adhere to in the provision of the health services.
Under the California Education Code 49426, the Institute has set the various roles that need to be adhered to by the nurses in their process of protecting and improving the health of children and other health-related barriers that might hinder a conducive learning environment. Some of the roles of a school nurse are to conduct immunization of the children in accordance with the law and with the consent of the parent or guardian, assessing the health of the school children and providing an interpretation of the children's health to the parents and guardians (California School Health Centers Association, 2010).
