As a nursing student pursuing my Associate Degree in Nursing, I will complete and receive my degree in two years and apply for licensure to NCLEX-RN to become a Registered Nurse (RN). As an Associate Degree Nurse, I will have several roles in the market that are; care provider, care manager, and a member within the nursing community. This degree in the market will enable me to work as a communicator providing psychological safety, establishing effective communication, and make referrals that are based on the patients' needs and my knowledge of the available resources. In addition, I can also work as a teacher who will implement teaching plans that are specific to the level of development of the patient, knowledge, and the needs for learning.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is aiming at increasing nurses having a baccalaureate degree in the health care system from 50% to 80% by 2020. After this, I will enroll for masters and Ph.D. programs. This will be through obtaining funding that will be offered by the various funding programs and will help in achieving IOM's target of increasing BSNs and number of doctorate nurses in the health care system. These will help me move from the level of technical nursing as an ASN to the level of professional nursing practice. The degrees will bequeath me with management and leadership skills which are the two knowledge bases that managers in the health care system actively seek. The management skills will help me move into a management role while the leadership skills will be an asset for me in the management position.
