Nursing Leadership & What it Means to Me
Nursing leadership is a specialized and relatively new nursing role. It aims to turn nurses into highly skilled individuals to improve the safety and quality outcomes for the ill. This paper aims to help future nursing leaders educate them about the qualities required by the profession to make a difference as it provides insight into a consistent leadership framework for nursing education (Miles & Scott, 2019). It is highly significant for me as it will help me improve my skills ad understand the professional in detail.
Leadership in nursing for me is about leading a team and improving as a team to ensure constant improvements in the healthcare sector. It is about a deeper understanding of taking steps to ensure the long-term success of day-to-day procedures (Vaughn et al., 2020). To my understanding, a leader must understand problems and should be able to find a solution. These problems can be budget constraints, patient safety, or even staffing shortages.
My definition of a leader looks at the holistic picture instead of focusing on improving in one area alone. A leader is self-aware and knows his shortcomings. He speaks openly and accurately with a high tendency to remain optimistic even during drawbacks in his career. He is an emotionally intelligent person with exceptional social skills.
Florence Nightingale, more famously known as the Mother of Modern Nursing, is a nursing leader that I aspire to be like because of her dedication and hard work throughout her career. She served the British military in the Crimean War that led to developing a Polar Area Diagram by her that healthcare uses.
Nursing leadership requires skills like agility, awareness, multitasking, and communication. I believe I am an agile individual who can cater to the need to make instantaneous decisions to save a life or implement rapid changes in the practices.
