Describe the differing approaches of nursing leaders & managers to issues in practice
Nursing shortage and nursing turnover
The healthcare industry presents several challenges especially for the nursing leaders and managers in dealing terms of efficient delivery of healthcare services. An example case of issues that emerge in the industry is the increasing number of nursing turnover rates and the extended nursing shortage. Evidently, there is a growing challenge to hire new clinical nurses while trying to retain the same registered nurses working with various organization and healthcare institutions (Huston, 2013). In this view, one would agree that unendurable shortage of such professionals has an immediate effect on the healthcare sector which results to under delivery of healthcare services. Such challenges complicate the responsibility of nursing leaders and manager within various healthcare institutions and organization.
The ground to develop such an argument is that in the case of nursing shortages, the existing professionals may be overwhelmed by different duties. On the same note, it is important to highlight that increased turnover rates of clinical nurses also affects the patient care and creates dissatisfaction within the healthcare industry. In this view, it is important to note that nursing leaders and managers are current personnel faced with responsibilities to oversee these challenges. Subsequently, the issues develop from the challenges posed by administrative leaders given that the said staff requires additional resources to manage such a problem (Huston, 2013). Such a line of reasoning originates from the fact that the nursing leaders and managers have to evaluate particular issues that result in such issues within the healthcare institution or organization.
Nursing managers have different approaches to dealing with the nursing shortage and turnover issues. For instance, a nursing leader may choose to work for an organization targeting a lucrative career opportunity. As such, they would handle the arising cases of nursing turnover differently as compared to a nursing manager. As such, a nursing leader would consider the option of educating more community members on the benefits of studying the nursing courses ad practicing such a career. Such an approach would work effectively for the nursing leader considering that they would engage the community in such an awareness program to increase the number of nursing students and practitioners (Huston, 2013). Importantly, they decision would develop in the case that they would want to plan better for the future or make easy replacements over time. In this view, the nursing leader would advocate for a program that would increase the nursing funding given that they are conversant with the challenges facing the nursing student population. For instance, they would enforce publicly funded schemes that target to expand resources for supporting the nursing education programs. Additionally, a registered nurse would consider the option to support better recognition of registered nurses and their services within reimbursement systems around the world.
