Nursing - electronic medical records. IMPLEMENTATION OF EHR

Essay Instructions:

As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things. Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with: •Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things. •Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices. •Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur. •Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to “play around’ with the new technology and explore its capabilities. •Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations. Note: You are not required to purchase Rogers’ book or pursue further information regarding his list of five qualities. The information provided here is sufficient to complete this Assignment. The full reference for Rogers’ work is provided below the due date on this page. For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns. You have a meeting scheduled with the nurses 1 week prior to the training on the new EHR system. Consider how you can use the five qualities outlined by Rogers (2003) to assist in preparing the nurses for the upcoming implementation. To prepare •Review the Learning Resources this week about successful implementations of EHRs. •Consider how you would present the new EHR system to the nurses to win their approval. •Reflect on the five qualities outlined by Rogers. How would addressing each of those areas improve the likelihood of succes Write a 3page paper which includes the following: •Using Rogers’ (2003) theory as a foundation, outline how you would approach the meeting with the nurses. One of the most problems with implementing electronic medical record is the user attitude presented by the nurses. Having nurses on board from the start is critical in ensuring the success of the program. It is essential to understand how nurses usually feel about new electronic health record (EHR) to design communication, reframe misconception, and create a new perception of the system. If nurses are well informed about the new system, and they understand it fully, they are likely to champion the system unlike those that have not been trained or informed about the impending changes. The importance of having fully informed nurses on board has been emphasized by scholars throughout. It’s in this background that the following paragraphs seek to highlight a systematic way of preparing nurses to be able to receive the new EHR.
According to Rodgers (as cited in Geibert, 2006). Theory of diffusion of innovation, a new concept requires clear and succinct communication to sink on the target group and minimize resistance. Nurses play a significant role in the documentation of files in EHR systems. They are also the focal point of interaction when it comes to EHR. To successfully implement such a program, nurses have to be incorporated ta the initial stages (Gagnon et al., 2009) they must be told upfront what the new system has for them and how they will benefit from it before they can decide to support or assume it.
The healthcare field requires innovative and efficient leaders who appreciate the role of innovation. These leaders must recognize diversity and change, foster and implement innovation and creativity. Nurse leaders are influential in disseminating information about a potential innovative piece. Understanding the role these nurses play is important, to engage nursing leaders to champion change create a culture of versatility and receptive to change. The primary strategy is to answer the fundamental concerns that Everett categories as the five characteristics of innovation. EHR implementation usually records high rates of success in places
Borrowing from Evert’s (as cited in Geibert, 2006). Relative advantage, the new system will help the nurses improve their way of doing things. EHR will ensure the nurses no longer spend time in tracking reports (e.g., EKGs, lab and x-ray reports, and hospital admission and discharge summaries) that have not yet been filed into a paper chart. EHR provides a platform where these reports can easily be scanned and place into the system thus making it easy to retrieve. Moreover, the system will make life easy for the nurses ...
