NRS-433V-RS-Research Critique Picot: Type 2 Diabetes and African American

Essay Instructions:

This is a two-part rough draft assignment consisting of a Research Critique and PICOT Statement. The assignment should be 1,500-1,750 words.
The final draft will be submitted in Topic 5.
Research Critique
Prepare a critical analysis of a qualitative and a quantitative study focusing on the problem statement, study purpose, research question, literature review, and theoretical framework. This can be one of the selected articles from your previous literature review or a new peer-reviewed article.
The completed analysis should connect to your identified practice problem of interest.
Refer to "Research Critique Guidelines." Questions under each heading should be addressed as a narrative in the structure of a formal paper.
PICOT Statement
The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
Read the PICOT article "Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step: Asking the Clinical Question: A Key Step in Evidence-Based Practice" along with the "Chapter 18: Using Research in Evidence-Based Nursing Practice" PowerPoint resource.
The first step of the EBP process is to develop a question from the practice problem you drafted in Topic 1. Start with the patient and identify the clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. Consider the research critique as you draft your PICOT statement.
Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT statement in an area of interest to you, which is applicable to your proposed capstone project.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Problem Statement
Clinical nurses and nurse researchers identify research topics to generate research findings applicable in evidence-based practice (Burns & Grove, 2011). African Americans are at a higher risk of diabetes type 2 compared to other demographic groups, while diabetes self-management has been identified as being effective to manage the condition. Purcell & Cutchen (2013) sought to understand the effectiveness of diabetes self-management education among African Americans. The barriers and challenges to managing diabetes are considered in the intervention to inform the researchers on the most effective strategies to improve health outcomes for those living with diabetes type 2. Previous studies have mostly highlighted the need for promoting self management, but in this study, the researchers acknowledge the importance of culturally-centered interventions in improving health outcomes.
Even as those with diabetes have knowledge on diabetes management, the cost of healthy eating, blood glucose monitoring, fear and denial are factors that affect diabetes management practices. The case for diabetes management programs targeting African Americans is that this helps in the development of culturally sensitive interventions to promote diabetes self-management. The African American population is underserved as health promotion programs may fail to integrate the unique cultural values that influence health behaviors. In any case, among the low-income diabetes patients there is doubt on the efficacy of health interventions.
Purpose and Research Questions
Purcell & Cutchen (2013) focused on the cultural factors that influence the diabetes self care behaviors among African Americans. To understand how daily living experiences influence health behaviors, there is a need to identify factors that affect diabetes self-management.
The research was designed to answer the questions:
How has diabetes diagnosis affected eating habits and lifestyle?
What factors affect the ability to self-manage diabetes?
Are there any skills that the study participants found useful to improve health outcomes
Is there social support and if so has it been effective?
Do health practitioners offer relevant support?
How does the diabetes self-management program meet patient needs?
The research questions were relevant to the study, as the researchers sought information among African Americans living with diabetes. The participants had previously been involved in diabetes education classes. Additionally, the focus group approach is effective as the respondents participate in focus group discussions.
Literature Review
The study emphasized the need for cultural competent interventions as highlighted by other researchers, and mainly relied on qualitative studies. The implications of other studies were relevant in the study to guide ...
