Introduction
The management plays a key role in the success of any business organization. As such, the success or failure of the organization is largely dependent on the management. Managers often motivate their employees in order for them to work towards achieving shared goals and objectives of the company. However, managers need to understand the motivating drivers of their employees in order to motivate them accordingly. In this regard, a number of theories have been put forward to explain the needs that influence the success of both employees and managers in the workplace. Among the theories is the McClelland's three need theory which holds that the specific needs of an individual are acquired with time as well as influenced by the individual's life experiences. This essay examines the correlation between the McClelland's three need theory and the success of managers in the workplace.
McClelland's 3-Need Theory
McClelland's three need theory holds that an individual's motivational needs include affiliation, power, and achievement (Borkowski, 2009). Although most managers tend to have a combination of all the needs, some demonstrate a stronger affinity to a single motivational need. Such tendency influences the management style and behavior, and hence their success in the workplace.
Achievement
Achievement refers to one's need to succeed or excel (Borkowski, 2009). Managers who attain great achievements in the workplace are often responsible for their performances.
