Letter to the Editor Florida Times-Union on “Health Disparities among Low-income Populations”

Dear Editor:
As a student and person working in the healthcare sector, I was glad to read the article “Residents review health disparities in Jacksonville” by Times-Union Editorial, published in your newspapers (Florida Times-Union) on May 18, 2005. Although the article was written five years ago, I can ascertain that disparity in health and healthcare especially, in low-income neighborhoods and populations. My aim in writing this letter is to notify you that inequalities are still an issue affecting the U.S. healthcare sector. In my day-to-day activities in the healthcare sector, I have witnessed health care disparities, especially among minority ethnic groups such as African American, Latino, and Pakistani ethnic groups and patients from low-income backgrounds. For example, I have seen a healthcare facility where patients from these populations cannot be referred to as cardiologists or OB-GYN specialists. These practitioners are likely to refuse to accept patients from such backgrounds. Most of these specialists avoid absorbing the costs of caring for disadvantaged patients' chronic health problems. The patients seem to have several health problems, given their lack of access to health care.
As a person who is in the line of health care delivery, I, too, have noted with concern that lack of access to care is a significant challenge that has resulted in disparities. As such, I believe that massive improvement is needed to ensure that health disparities, especially among disadvantaged populations and individuals, are eliminated.
