Leadership Theory
Leadership is an essential skill for nurses at every level. For senior nurses to be effective in their various roles, they should take up various leadership behaviours and characteristics (Sherman, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to discuss my leadership assessment results and how I can apply them to my nursing practice. Furthermore, one individual whom I consider to be an effective leader is identified and the particular traits which I see in this person that support my selection of her as an effective leader are discussed. The results of my leadership assessment are used as a guideline to include in my summary the characteristics or strengths which I have in common with this selected leader. Lastly, this paper specifies how my identified strengths demonstrate mastery of ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Standard 12: Leadership.
Assessment Inventory
The Assessment Inventory that was completed is the DiSC. It is worth mentioning that DiSC is essentially a personal assessment tool which is utilized in improving communication, teamwork and work productivity. The DiSC model is non-judgment and offers a common language which could be utilized by people to understand themselves better and to adapt their behaviours with other people. This could be in leadership position, a sales relationship or a work team (Disc Profile, 2012). By participating in the DiSC program, I completed a sequence of questions and a detailed report regarding my personality and behaviour was produced. According to the report, the results of the assessment revealed that I am a D/SC. This means I have a blend of Dominance (D), Steadiness (S) and Conscientiousness (C) traits. My Dominance traits are somewhat stronger than my Steadiness or Conscientiousness traits. Some of the words which describe me according to the results include collaborative, conscientious, driven, and doer (Disc Profile, 2012). In addition, the results demonstrate that even as I am inclined toward a task-oriented approach, I possess both people-oriented and task-oriented traits. Depending on the situation, I can either be outgoing or reserved. The results also demonstrated that I probably like solving problems and getting results whilst maintaining quality results as well as healthy relationships.
I agree with the results since I actually believe that I possess 3 styles which show up in a relatively strong manner. I particularly exhibit the Dominance trait whenever I am forceful, strong-willed and direct. I will enhance my nursing practice by utilizing my Dominant traits more in my leadership roles. For instance, by expressing my D style more, I would prioritize accepting challenge, taking action and attaining results. I will also value competency, personal freedom, action, as well as concrete results. In my leadership roles, I will also be more determined, strong-willed, forceful, demanding, direct, self-confident and fast-paced. My goal would be to realize unique accomplishments.
