After the Affordable Care Act was approved, the revenue cycle management in several hospitals has changed significantly. Most hospitals strive to have an effective system to handle financial pressure, according to the ACA regulations (Michael et al., 2013). More patients are increasingly paying for out of pocket cost, challenging the collection of revenue at the point of services. Hospitals experience challenges in accurately billing patients and payers for services rendered due to inadequate policies (Rauscher & Wheeler, 2010). The paper will address how to strengthen the revenue cycle management to overcome some of the revenue collection challenges.
Performance: Propose an Initiative
The proposed initiative is to implement financial policies for employees; these policies are important as part of revenue cycle management because policies guide patients regarding collections of copayments and unpaid money (Rauscher & Wheeler, 2010). The policies will stipulate insurance requirement and financial arrangement for unpaid balances or other payment arrangements (Lineen, 2014). The financial tool will serve as a tool for health care providers responsible for billing, its best to have an effective process for tracking and resolving denied claims to avoid financial loss.
Data Performance: Discuss Data Determinants of Success
It is important to ensure that payments are collected accurately, and any denied claims are appropriately addressed. The Affordable Care Act opened doors for many people to access health care coverage and increase the number of patients responsible for paying some amount due to the health insurance exchanges (Michael et al., 2013). The number of individuals purchasing deductible plans also increased up to 90 percent with more than 12.7 million people accessing the plan (Cole, Chaudhary & Bang, 2014). The popularity of high deductible plans has increased significantly from 2006. That is why many service providers find it difficult to collect full payment for services from their patients at the point of service. Providers only collect 50 to 70 percent after a visit (Cole, Chaudhary & Bang, 2014).
Not all health care providers have an efficient financial system to collect the maximum amount of revenue at the point of service. A good financial policy will include strategies for collecting payment like implementing credit card on file program. Since consumers use credit cards to purchase other items like food, they can also use credit cards to pay for health care services. More than 70 percent health care consumers use electronic billing methods like e-checks or credit cards (Michael et al., 2013).
