Why is an understanding of child mortality essential in describing advancements in healthcare outcomes?
Child mortality has been widely considered as one of the indicators of the quality of health in a country. Berger (2001) goes ahead to note that “infant mortality rate (IMR) is an indicator of a country’s civilization.” So, for a country like the U.S. which boasts of being at the top of the world regarding technological development, civilization is not fully attained with its IMR of 5.8 as of 2014 (Sawyer and Gonzales, 2017). In their article, Sawyer and Gonzales compare the U.S.’s IMR with that of similarly wealthy countries, and the results indicate that the U.S. is not doing very well.
