A 50-year-old man has been suffering from substernal pain for the last 5 months, particularly on waking up in the morning. He lost his job a year ago and was suffering from depression. He consumes about 12–16 cans of beer every day. He has lost his appetite too and says that eating aggravates pain.
Is this acute or chronic gastritis?
 This is acute gastritis as there has been a rapid onset of the disease in the past five months where a sudden inflammation or swelling is affecting the stomach lining. The man has suffered substernal pain for the past five months, which indicates there is likely gastritis as eating also aggravates the pain. Alcohol seems to worsen the man’s condition and may stop if he stops drinking alcohol.
 What factors may lead to the development of gastritis?
 The man consumed approximately 12–16 cans of beer every day. Alcohol erodes and damages the stomach lining and increases the risk of developing gastritis, abdominal pain, and vomiting. The digestive acid attacks the stomach lining when the lining is weakened, as is the case with alcohol. Anything that causes mucosal damage increases the risk of gastritis (Jensen et al., 2019).
