The health insurance coverage of Canada offers the gold standard of care through its universal health coverage. The revenues used to pay for health care come from a single source. Moreover, the National Health Insurance (NHI) is financed through a system of a single-payer using general taxes (Glied et al., 2019). As such, co-payments by consumers are negligible and reimbursements involve only the government and care provider. Concerning the rationing of health care services, the Canadian system uses waiting lists and exclusion of certain services such as dental services and prescription medication from the universal cover (Glied et al., 2019). Long waiting lists are also evident in the U.S. for procedures such as medical resonance imaging (MRIs) and hip replacements. Limited access is also imposed on the newest drugs (Freed, Cubanski, & Neuman, 2019).
The crafting of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was inspired by the need to manage health care costs more effectively like other developed countries. Notably, the objectives of the ACA were formulated in a similar way to match the insurance coverage plans of countries such as Switzerland and the Netherlands. For example, the individual mandate inherent in the ACA is comparable to the Swiss system where failure to buy private insurance attracts a fine (Tikkanen, 2019).
