Abstract
Female genital mutilation is practiced in the sub-Saharan africa and one of the main steps towards eradicating it understanding the attitudes of the medical professionals.
Context
Attitudes towards FGM, especially relative to the medical professionals is pivotal to the efforts to eradicate the vice.
Objectives
The researchers sought to understand the attitudes assumed by medical professional in areas were the practice are rampant.
Design
A descriptive approach was used in the study to try and establish a premise.
Participants
The study included 468 participants from rural health care facilities in Gambia
Main outcome measures
The researchers were looking for the percentage of medical professional against and supportive of the vice and the descriptive elements of the groups.
Result
42.5% of the professionals supported the practice and 47.2% could practice it on the daughters, while 7.6% had performed on patients.
Discussion
More men than women supported the vice according to study.
Methods
The researchers used a cross sectional descriptive study with a quantitative approach.
Conclusion
Cultural significance is more important to medical professionals in this areas that their professional training.
