About 585,000 women globally still die every year as a consequence of childbirth and pregnancy. The majority of these women live in developing countries; a good example is Sri Lanka, which is found in South Asia. The disparities are enormous: for a woman living in Sri Lanka, the risk of maternal mortality is over 47 times higher than for a woman living in U.S (Sri Lanka, Case study6). It is known that most of these deaths can be prevented. Women should not encounter the unequal risk of disability or death as a result of childbearing and pregnancy, simply due to where they live. The world through international community possesses resources, tools and knowledge that can be utilized to address population healthcare disparity.
Since the 1950s, the government of Sri Lanka has created interventions and commitment to developing health services and enhance maternal healthcare through an extensive rural health network. Consequently, Sri Lanka has made success in minimizing maternal deaths through enhancing access to maternal healthcare through developed professionalism and wide utilization of midwives; strong health system which offers free services to all populations as well as the rural regions; systematic application of health information to guide decisions made and identify challenges; and focus on quality enhancement to vulnerable groups (Sri Lanka, Case study6). Today, Sri Lanka has skilled practitioners who attend 97% of the births comparing this to 30% in 1940. The country has achieved more and spent less than most nations at similar income level.
