Assignment Overview
The Springdale Community Coalition has asked each member to gather some information about specific health issues as they work toward creating a healthier community. You were asked to focus on obesity. Read the following studies on obesity:
Frank et al. Obesity Relationships with Community Design, Physical Activity, and Time Spent in Cars. Am J Prev Med 2004;27(2)
Froehlich-Grobe K and Lollar D. Obesity and Disability, Time to Act. Am J Prev Med 2011;41(5):541–545
After reviewing the materials listed in the Background Information, please write a 2-page paper to address the following:
What is the extent of the obesity problem in the United States?
What individual, social, and environmental factors have led to the epidemic of obesity in the United States? Specify at least one of each. Consider community design and the evidence presented by Frank et al (2004) in your response.
What strategies can the Springdale Community Coalition use to combat obesity at the community level? You can discuss strategies for community planning, neighborhoods, schools, worksites, or healthcare facilities (just choose one). Consider the disabled community and the data presented by Froehlich-Grobe. How would this population be addressed and accommodated differently than for the general population?

Extent of Obesity inthe United States
In the recent past one of the leading and preventable causes of high mortality rates in the USA was smoking. Obesity has however taken a position on the same stand, as it is estimated to be the leading cause of morbidity in the US population. More than 30% of the American population is estimated to have a BMI that is above 30(Froehlich-Grobe&Lollar, 2011). This is quite risky considering that, people that are obese have a higher chance of developing health complications associated with the heart and diabetes. Obese people also tend to spend more on their health care expenses that the rest of the population. This extrapolates in to higher spending for the government in light of the people that are going to visit the hospitals with obesity related complications relative to the general health care expenses in the budget. Other than the genetic factors, poor diet and lack of exercise or physical activities are the leading causes(Van Cleave, 2010).
To stamp the severity of the problem, it is estimated that more than 280,000 adults die every year in the United States from obesity; if the figure of the children that die from the same is included the figure would considerably increase(Frank, Andresen &Schmid, 2004). Relative to the lack of physical activity, disabled people are exposed to a higher chance of developing obesity than the rest of the population(Van Grouw& Volpe, 2013). What is more worrying is the fact that more than 20% of the US population experience disability, which account for more than 54 million people. However, there are fewer recognizable efforts to combat obesity among the disabled than the rest of the population(Froehlich-Grobe&Lollar, 2011).
Factors that influence the chances of developing obesity
In light of the fact that individuals that have disability tend to have less physical activities, they chances of being obese also increase significantly(Froehlich-Grobe&Lollar, 2011). For people that not disable, they have to ability to move around and exercise and thus reduce the likelihood that they are going to develop obesity. In terms of the environment, it also shapes what chances one has of developing obesity. Ideally th...
