I concur with the social constructionist perspective that a body is a blank screen onto which the societies project their ideas about gender. The reason for this is that the constructionist’s framework believes that there are no essential and distinct characteristics that are universally for men and women. Different societies have their construction of what is suitable for their men and women, and this varies across different cultures. In this case, a behavior that is perceived as the right thing to do for men can be considered as deviation when it is done in another culture by the same gender. An interesting example is the Maasai community living in the northern Kenya that has preserved its tradition for a long time despite the influence of modernization. The Maasai believe that women are responsible for building their houses (Manyatta) and taking care of other family members; this is a unique tradition that contrasts with others where men are the ones involved in setting up the house. Again, the constructionists hold that men and women can engage in different activities that transverse what is considered as feminine and masculine. The perception is true in the contemporary world where women have broken the glass ceiling that barred them from achieving the top positions in the jobs previously assumed to be the work of men. For instance, Irene Rosenfeld and Indra Nooyi who are the Chief executive officers of the top most companies. Men also have assumed the responsibilities that were initially a preserve for women.
