Concepts are the mental ideas that explain a phenomenon and are components of a theory, and the concepts can be abstract, empirical or inferential. Nursing concepts act as organizing structures for nursing frameworks. Similarly conceptual connections of the theoretical frameworks have been essential to improving nursing knowledge (Alligood, n.d.). A theory is a statement that explains a phenomenon based on a hypothesis, assumptions, propositions and concepts are connected in nursing models to explain nursing theories. The theories generate knowledge since the interrelated concepts are linked and help to describing specific nursing phenomena.
Im & Chung (2012) point out that the concepts are often used to create and develop theoretical works, where the theories are then linked to research. Many of the conceptual developments in nursing are created after similar concepts are analyzed and developed to form a coherent conceptual framework (Im & Chung, 2002). Nursing researchers are increasingly applying nursing theories to nursing research, where concepts are integrated in developing theories to form conceptual models. Nursing supports evidence-based practice, and in cases where evidence supports theories, this allows nursing researchers to develop conceptual models (Carrington, 2012).
Concepts and theories are interrelated in conceptual models, which are then logically ordered compared to concepts alone. The environment, health, human beings and nutrition ...
