Challenges of Cross-functional Teams in Nursing
The cross-functional teams are critical in tackling most clinical matters because of the different innovations they bring that improve both group and individual performance. The teams allow application and synthesis of knowledge from the distinct specialized disciplines (Alexander et al., 2005). However, they demand proper management and leadership to ensure the achievement of these positive outcomes.
As a nursing leader, one of the primary issues faced in the management of cross-functional teams is the aligning of the priorities and goals of all the members. In some cases, the individuals place more focus on the areas that influenced their performance measurements and hence other are not considered a priority. The effect is more concentration on achieving the functional goals with little consideration of the overall team objective of improved patient outcome.
The problem was solved by creating and communicating the strategic goals that all the team members were supposed to concentrate. According to Leggat (2007), the success of teams is realized when the team competencies are directed towards clear objectives. By defining these aims, the interconnections of the functions, and how each serve to achieve the enhanced patient well-being, there was an improved cross-functional collaboration.
