The sole purpose of this article was to assess the occurrence of headaches, depression and mild cognition infirmity among athletes. The participants were French retired sportspeople. That is, rugby players and other top level retired sportsmen. The study was used to show the connection between the number of concussions that were reported and the scores from the evaluation of the disorders from the sportsmen.
A concussion is a sudden dysfunction of the brain. It is caused by a direct head blow. It’s one of the injuries sustained during sports that are uneasy to diagnose. Rugby players are the most affected. Consistent concussion leads to neurological diseases that are long term. These are; depression, headaches, a disorder of mild cognition, a summary of the brain component and neurodegenerative infections. The following disease comprises of the Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's diseases and lateral sclerosis that is amyotrophic.
In the research, questionnaire method was used. There were two groups. The participants who were retired players from rugby teams were being compared to other athletes from other games. The rugby team players were chosen from twenty-four different teams that had reached French championships in the year 1985-1990.A total of 1429 were identified.1047 of them were contacted, but only 524 were invited to participate. From the numbers, only 239 agreed to indulge in the research. From retired sportsmen group, 1164 retired sports people were identified from the Ministry of Sports, and 18 of the 41sports groups were contacted. From them, 637 were invited using a letter.138 players among the numbers finally agreed to engage in the study. Each participant was given a questionnaire that described mainly about their concussion’s history. Later, an interview by phone was conducted using valid surveys. This was mainly done to detect the frequency of headaches, disorder of major depression and mild cognition infirmity.
The subjects who participated in the research were divided into two groups that are the rugby group and the other sportsmen group. The rugby team was the exposed group while the other athlete's group was the control group. A total of 377 sportspeople were selected. All of them were French citizens and were male. Since it was a comparison test between retired athletes, there were 239 players of rugby and 138 other sportsmen. All the athletes selected had reached the level of championship internationally or in the French national competition. It was to be in the year of 1985 to the year 1990.
Results found showed that rugby players were more affected with concussions than other retired sportspersons. For the mild cognition disorder, the retired sportsmen were less affected than the rugby play...
