From their name, school nurses are tasked with the provision of ample health services to students. Schools are often composed of children and youth with different health backgrounds. Some students get admitted with certain conditions that demand 24-hour monitoring and this responsibility falls to the school nurses during school days. The responsibilities of school nurses are not in surveillance and management but also involve provision of health education to the students, provision of preventive services, provision of referral advice as well as intervention and early identification of health issues. Children spend most of their time at home and school, and it is important that for parents and school nurses to work together to ensure that the safety and health of the children is ensured. The above statement means that school nurses should not limit their scope to within the school buildings and compounds. This article will explicate on some of the ways that school nurses can partner and collaborate with the community to ensure that children, as well as the community, are safe and healthy.
One of the roles of school nurses is to promote health by providing health education to students within their care (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2008). Information is indeed of the essence in the fight to ensure that the community is healthy. The role above, however, limits school nurses’ scope to schools only.
