Medical laboratory practitioners are bound by the code of conduct to behave in certain ways that help further the practice and deliver quality results. One of the essential work behaviors that is vital to adhere to is the need to ensure correct technique when using a pipette, a wrong technique like depressing the push button right down the second stop will constantly result greater volume than then the one set on volume display. I also learnt that a pipette need to be calibrated correctly otherwise it will deliver incorrect readings no matter how great the technique is. I learnt to be able to check the calibration and uphold greater technique to ensure correct pipette reading. Moreover sloppiness with pipetting technique may cause unreliable results as a result of imprecision. In Holly Sampson case, it was important to detect the etiological presentation of infection. I learnt that using the correct calibration and pipette technique helped in obtaining the correct results and successfully diagnosing Holly Sampson’s case.
In addition, I learnt that it is important to capture identifiers on patient slides correctly on the request forms. Patients full name, patient’s date of birth, patient’s medical record number must all be captured correctly. In order to develop the right result for the right patient, it is imperative that medical laboratory scientists be diligent to ensure sample being analyzed belong to the ‘right patient".
