Novalee showed a lot of learning needs in the early stages of the movie. She was very superstitious about fives. The illiterate people are known to have superstitious beliefs as they try to understand the situations they encounter in life. Novalee was not educated and that is why she was superstitious about number five.
Another indication of Novalee’s learning needs was when she was given a Buckeye tree to take care of it. She is not able to handle it. Novalee did not know how to pronounce words such as nitrogen deficiency clearly. In addition she had never seen an index and she did not know how to use it. When she visited the library to carry out a research on photography she is seen stating that she does not know what they are talking about and that she has look for meanings of different words from the children’s dictionary. When at Wal-Mart, Novalee lacked basic education in nutrition by her choice of diets. One of her meals there was soda and potato chips which gave her stomachache.
