Introduction
The element of intentional teaching is aimed at providing young learners especially those of dual languages and those with special needs with quality education. In this case, the learning experiences gained by these learners play a significant role in establishing a foundation that has the capacity to guide them through their academic, emotional, and social endeavors, thus influencing their lives (Ann & Mary, 2005). Alternatively, it is significant for teachers to understand that intentional teaching aids in intellectual growth of these learners within a class environment. This paper seeks to establish the manner in which intentional teaching supports young learners, including children with special needs and those with dual languages.
Intentional Teaching in Supporting Learners
Learners are bound to fail in school for several reasons. In some occasions, they are bound to experience academic difficulties that are attributed to language challenges, learning difficulties, and the teaching and learning environment. For example, learners of dual languages are likely to fail in an instance where they have limited access to effective bilingual instructional approach as a second language. On the other hand, learners who have learning difficulties that stem from health issues, cultural and linguistic differences are also likely to fail if appropriate instructional methods are not incorporated (Ann & Mary, 2005) It is consequently important to note that these difficulties and challenges may turn out to be serious in the event that instructional methods are not modified to meet and address the specific learner’s needs. Unless these learners are subjected to appropriate learning interventions, they are likely to struggle, an aspect that would broaden the gap between their achievements and those of their peers.
In this case, the intentional teaching approach is conceived as a remedy that does not only happen by change, but is planed, thought, and purposed. Intentional teachers are therefore required to use their judgment, knowledge, and skills in organizing learning experiences that meets the needs of these learners; when unplanned for situation arise, they are in a position to recognize teaching opportunities and use these to their advantage. Intentional teaching according to Ann & Mary (2005), is the act of teachers establishing specific goals and outcomes that take into consideration learners of all domains in learning and development. Intentional teachers are consequently required to promote and integrate the element of meaningful learning among learners from different domains.
