Background: Most students have to fulfill a language requirement to get their degree. Generally, students need to show that they have a level of competence equivalent to four semesters of study of a language other than English.
The question: Should students be allowed to use ASL to fulfill that requirement?
Format of your answer: For this assignment, imagine you are writing an op-ed column for the Daily Collegian in which you present and argue for your answer to this question. Your column should be about 500 words long, and it should be organized and read like a typical well-argued op-ed piece. If you’re unfamiliar with that genre, look in the opinion section of any good newspaper (online or in print).
Reading assignment: Your op-ed piece will need to contain evidence in support of your arguments. You may draw evidence from the lecture on ASL, and you must also use the following reading:
Perlmutter, David (1991) “The language of the deaf.” The New York Review of Books vol. 38, no. 6.

Students should leave their comfort zone and learn American Sign Language (ASL). In contrast to spoken language, sign language uses three-dimensional, moving language. This may be difficult when learning at a tertiary level, especially for those who have never encountered the sign earlier. This opportunity gives one a chance to learn things that are usually hidden in the deaf community. ASL emerged from blending French sign language with the sign language already in use in the United States, introduced to the school by the students (Perlmutter, 1991). Although things have changed over time for the deaf community, the government has formulated articles into laws that protect the community.
ASL may differ from English and other foreign languages and be a hindrance between a student who hears and a deaf student due to the aspect of sound and different grammatical structure. A deaf student can still learn the same way a hearing child learns oral language. A child can understand words if they are associated with a sign. No matter its complexity, the ASL language is a bridge between languages where two people with different languages can communicate easily.
