When I was growing up, I thought that sign language and English were the same as I saw at that time. I learned about the ASL history when I joined the California State University of Long Beach. As I was majoring in Deaf Culture, I was able to understand what sign language was. Against my earlier thoughts, ASL was different. The history of ASL shows that it originated from France, and it was fascinating to learn about deaf history and ASL. I was wondering why deaf culture and deaf history were never taught in mainstream school. My guess is that, during the 60s and 70s, there was no enough information regarding the deaf community.
