Students will identify 3 research or scholarly articles on the same topic as the presented article for a “Further Reading” section in the anthology. Selected studies must be peer-reviewed and published in reputable, scholarly outlets (see Guidelines 1.1 in Chapter 1 of Durwin & Reese-Weber (2021) and readings from Williams (2020)). The section will include 1) APA citations, 2) brief summaries of each article with the intent to catch the reader’s interest and encourage further learning on the topic, and 3) a final statement integrating the findings from the 3 articles with the findings of the main research article focusing on classroom implications (So what does all of this research mean for us as physical education teachers, coaches, and mentors?). It is important to note that the research findings may not all align. Some articles included in the further reading section may contradict findings of the main article. The “Further Reading” section should be stylistically consistent with the two-page info-graphic handout.

In the study by Kirkham-King et al. (2017), the researchers focused on the physical education contextual factors associated with U.S. Students wearing accelerometers to measure physical activity in physical education. The students participated in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and there were also fitness lessons. The immediate environment influences physical activities, and the class size is one environmental factor that can affect the level of physical activity among school-aged children. The researchers highlighted that small class sizes in physical education are associated with increased physical activities (Kirkham-King et al., 2017). The school is an effective environment for promoting an active lifestyle through physical education and exercise. Identifying barriers to physical fitness in school would help promote students to be more physically active. Physical education can improve educational outcomes, but lessons and content should be well planned to enhance physical education and overall learning. 
Donnelly et al. 2017 reported no significant change in academic achievement after implementing Academic Achievement and Physical Activity across the Curriculum intervention (A + PAAC) in three years. However, there were inconsistent research findings on the effectiveness of physical activities on academic outcomes (Donnelly et al., 2017). This is partly because there are differences in how physical activities are integrated into lessons and academic content. Differences in durations when physical activity lessons were implemented, frequency of physical activities. More research is required to identify factors associated with improvement in academic performance after integrating physical activities into academic lessons. It is likely there are mediating factors between physical activities and physical activities. At the same time, physical activities and training can improve memory, attention span, or executive functions, which are associated with better academic performance.
