The importance of education cannot just easily be described with words. Education is an essential factor in improving one's status in life. It can be a vital tool that can change a life. For some, education is a ticket to a better career and future. While for others, it serves as a guiding path towards their destiny. Education may not be the basis for identifying the quality of one's life. However, it can be a determining factor. Through education, knowledge, skills, and attitude are enhanced. Most notably, the educational level attained dramatically affects the chances of getting employed. A highly educated person would most likely land a job with a higher position and a higher salary. It shows that the goals of education can impact one's life. This paper aims to discuss the impact of history, political, and social goals of education on today's current classroom.
Way back before America became the United States of America, a need for public education has already been present. The initial education system consisted of Latin and public schools designed to educate students on Puritan values and how a Bible should be read. Much of the schooling was conducted at home. However, children belonging to the elite social class were sent to Latin schools established for formal learning. The first official public school was established in 1635, in which taxpayers' dollars were used for support. Over the next century, despite establishing several public schools, there was a lack of a centralized education system. As a result, there was no assurance that a high quality of education was provided by schools (Spring, 2017).
The classroom setting during the 19th century had a different look. More towns have established public schools for children to attend. These classrooms are described as "sparsely decorated and furnished." It shows how frugal rural times were. All grade levels are being taught in a single classroom by a single teacher. Studies focus mostly on writing, reading, arithmetic, and good manners. In addition to this, resources were also limited. Slates and chalk were utilized for writing, while only a few books were used for literacy.
When the Founders established the need for public education, their goal was mostly political. The primary goal was civic education (Spring, 2017). Learning how to read is considered to be less critical as compared to teaching them in making wise decisions politically.
