Special educators who teach secondary students should develop a transition plan that is important and appropriate for the students. This transitional plan should be well advanced compared to the individual education program. In addition, it should have specific goals and services that will help students be successful after graduation in future training and education in the community or workforce. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, there are various components and legal needs of a transition plan for school faculty and exceptional education staff.
Strategies that Promote Successful Transitions for Students with Disabilities
First, special educators should work with the Individualized Educational Plan team to highlight in their career plan each student’s abilities. For instance, for students interested in classwork, more weight is needed on academic goals to be successful in their higher education (Francis et al., 2018). Similarly, if a student shows mechanical ability, conceivably preparing them to work in the mechanical careers would be more suitable. In the case of Alex, he is stressed in the sector of communicating with bosses. This is unfavorable because, as the case study stated, he may not get out in the case of an emergency.
Secondly, special educators should work with Alex and his mother, who has supported his communication skills. Working together would be a necessary skill to advance his work relationship with his college and seniors. Thirdly, special educators should introduce role-play situations to work with Alex to improve his skills in diverse situations. This working experience would give Alex a chance to solve future related situations.
