My observation was done on grade K-3 students. The educator presented an impeccable use of instructional strategies in enhancing the students’ comprehension strategies. Based on the response from the students, I could tell that the strategies used were effective in teaching listening skills, speaking skills, and vocabulary development skills.
The most effective strategy used in enhancing the students’ listening skills was the explanation of contexts using a combination of verbal and non-verbal cues. Images were also included. The excitement on the student’s facial expressions could tell that they were grasping the context. The use of images and non-verbal cues played a major role in capturing the learner’s attention. The key to great listening skills in a student is capturing their attention. If the student is attentive enough, they will hear every concept being outlined by the teacher. The students had an emergent level of proficiency, and therefore, the listening instructional strategy was the best suit. When asked questions regarding the context, they answered effectively, indicating that they have good listening skills.
The most effective strategy to enhance the students' speaking skills was asking the students to ask each other questions. The context began with simple salutations and questions about oneself.
